PROPER PADDLE LENGTHTo determine proper paddle length, sit in the canoe seat and place the blade completely in the water. The top of the grip should be at shoulder level. When you “push” the top of the paddle, your arm will be horizontal with the water. As you can see body trunk size, not overall height is the determining factor. If you compare trunk sizes you will find there is not much difference from one person to the next. Probably 90% of all adults can use a 54” paddle with a 20” long blade. A longer or shorter blade will change the overall length of the paddle by the amount the blade length varies. We believe that paddles with length determined as above, are proper for recreational cruising or racing. Whitewater paddlers, however, may want a little longer paddle for various whitewater maneuvers. |
